*What changes beneath the surface — and how to bring back comfort.*

Perhaps you've noticed it creeping up: skin that feels tight after a shower, rough patches on your arms or legs, or a moisturizer that suddenly doesn't seem to do quite enough.

If your skin feels drier as you get older, **you're not imagining it — and you haven't done anything wrong.**

Age and hormonal changes can affect the skin's oils, moisture levels, and protective barrier. The good news is that a few simple changes can make dry skin much more comfortable.

---

## 💡 **What's changing?**

Your skin naturally produces less oil as you age. Around menopause, declining estrogen can also contribute to changes in skin thickness, collagen, and moisture.

At the same time, the skin barrier can become less effective at keeping moisture in.

Then come the everyday culprits: **hot showers, dry indoor air, harsh soaps, and frequent washing.**

None of this means your skin is unhealthy. It's simply skin at a different stage of life — and it may appreciate a little more care than it once did.

---

## **💯 What helps? Start with gentle.**

**Turn down the temperature.** Long, hot showers can remove some of the skin's natural oils. Try warm water and keep showers reasonably short.

**Choose a gentle cleanser.** A mild, fragrance-free cleanser is often kinder to dry or sensitive skin than harsh soap.

**Pat, don't scrub.** After bathing, gently pat your skin dry rather than rubbing vigorously.

### **Moisturize while skin is still damp**

This simple habit can make a noticeable difference.

Apply moisturizer within a few minutes of bathing while your skin still has some moisture on it. Look for ingredients such as **ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid.**

For very dry skin, creams and ointments are generally more moisturizing than lightweight lotions.

### **Give your skin a little extra support**

**Try a humidifier.** Dry indoor air can make already-dry skin feel worse, particularly during colder months.

**Drink normally throughout the day.** Adequate hydration supports overall health, although simply drinking extra water isn't a cure for dry skin.

**Eat a varied diet.** Foods such as fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fruits, and vegetables provide nutrients that support overall skin health.

**And keep using sunscreen.** Sun protection isn't only about wrinkles. UV exposure contributes to long-term skin damage and can weaken the skin's overall appearance and resilience.

· · ·

### **Don't ignore persistent itching**

Dry skin can become itchy, and scratching can further irritate the skin.

Regular moisturizing can help break that cycle. But if your skin becomes **very itchy, cracked, painful, inflamed, or suddenly much worse**, it's worth speaking with a doctor or dermatologist.

Persistent dryness can sometimes be related to medications, eczema, thyroid problems, or other conditions that deserve attention.

### **The bottom line**

Dryer skin is a common part of getting older, but you don't have to simply accept uncomfortable skin.

Try the simple things first:

**Warm showers. Gentle cleansing. Moisturizer on damp skin. Less irritation. Sun protection.**

You don't need a complicated 10-step routine.

Sometimes mature skin simply needs **more moisture and a little more kindness.**

**Your skin doesn't need to look younger to deserve excellent care. It just needs to feel comfortable, protected, and cared for.**
